Mini Session or Full Session? A Guide for Houston Families Choosing What Type of Session Is Best for Them

You finally found five uninterrupted minutes (probably hiding in the laundry room) and thought, β€œOkay. It’s time. We need updated family photos.”

But now you’re staring at two options: mini session or full session. Suddenly it feels like one more decision you don’t have the energy for.

Let me make this easy.

What’s a Mini Session?

A mini session is short and sweet. Just 15 minutes. You’ll get a handful of beautiful images that feel like your familyβ€”not stiff or staged, just real.

Because we’re working with a quick window, mini sessions are a little more structured than full sessions. We’ll get that classic shot of everyone smiling at the camera (perfect for cards or gifts), toss in a few playful prompts to bring out real connection, and wrap it up before anyone has time to melt down or lose interest. It’s fast, fun, and full of heart.

They’re perfect if:

  • You’re short on time and just need a few updated shots

  • Your toddler melts down after 10 minutes

  • Your teen only agreed if it was going to be quick (I see you, high schoolers)

  • You want something simple for cards, gifts, or those fridge-worthy prints

  • You’re juggling a weekend when everyone is finally in the same place and just want to make the most of it

Even in a short window, we can create something meaningful. Whether you’re chasing toddlers or trying to catch your college kid between semesters, I’ll guide you every step of the way. You won’t have to wonder if we got β€œthe shot.” We will.

What’s a Full Session?

Full sessions are where the real magic happens. They last about 45 to 60 minutes and give us time to slow down, settle in, and really tell your story.

This is where we capture the little thingsβ€”your daughter resting her head on your shoulder like she still does, the way your son lights up when you tease him, the way your baby fits on your hip, or the glance between you and your partner that quietly says, β€œLook at this life we’ve built.”

If your kids need time to warm up (whether they’re three or seventeen), this gives them the space to do just that. Some of the best smiles show up when no one’s in a rush. And some of the most meaningful moments unfold when we just let them.

Choose a full session if:

  • You want a gallery of images that truly capture this season of life

  • You’re holding onto a chapter that feels bigβ€”like the last year before kindergarten or the last one before they leave for college

  • You want room for outfit changes, a meaningful location, or simply more breathing space

  • You’re craving more than just photosβ€”you want connection and emotion

Plenty of families start with a mini, fall in love with the experience, and come back for a full session when they’re ready for more. Sometimes you don’t realize how much it matters until you see it in front of you.

Still Not Sure?

Here’s a simple way to decide.

If you want a few updated photos with no stress, a mini session is perfect.

If you want to slow down, sink into the moment, and walk away with a full gallery that feels like your family’s story, a full session is the way to go.

Want to See the Difference?

Sometimes it helps to see what a mini session and a full session can look like in real life. Below, I’m sharing two families I photographed in the same location so you can get a feel for what each type of session offers.

First up: a 15-minute mini session. Short, sweet, and packed with loveβ€”we kept things simple and stayed in one spot, focusing on connection and getting that classic family shot with a few sweet in-between moments.

Next: a full family session in the same spot, plus a second location nearby. Because we had the time to move around and settle in, we were able to get a little more creative and a lot more variety. With older kids, that looked like relaxed group shots, natural interactions, and a mix of classic portraits and more candid moments that felt true to them. Full sessions give us the space to slow down and really tell the story of who your family is right now.

No Wrong Choice, Just the Right One for You

Whether we spend 15 minutes or an hour together, I’m going to make sure you feel seen, celebrated, and cared for. But if this season feels like one you never want to forget, let’s make space for it.

Let’s press pause and make something beautiful.
