Mini Session or Full Session? A Guide for Houston Families Choosing What Type of Session Is Best for Them
You finally found five uninterrupted minutes (probably hiding in the laundry room) and thought, βOkay. Itβs time. We need updated family photos.β
But now youβre staring at two options: mini session or full session. Suddenly it feels like one more decision you donβt have the energy for.
Let me make this easy.
Whatβs a Mini Session?
A mini session is short and sweet. Just 15 minutes. Youβll get a handful of beautiful images that feel like your familyβnot stiff or staged, just real.
Because weβre working with a quick window, mini sessions are a little more structured than full sessions. Weβll get that classic shot of everyone smiling at the camera (perfect for cards or gifts), toss in a few playful prompts to bring out real connection, and wrap it up before anyone has time to melt down or lose interest. Itβs fast, fun, and full of heart.
Theyβre perfect if:
Youβre short on time and just need a few updated shots
Your toddler melts down after 10 minutes
Your teen only agreed if it was going to be quick (I see you, high schoolers)
You want something simple for cards, gifts, or those fridge-worthy prints
Youβre juggling a weekend when everyone is finally in the same place and just want to make the most of it
Even in a short window, we can create something meaningful. Whether youβre chasing toddlers or trying to catch your college kid between semesters, Iβll guide you every step of the way. You wonβt have to wonder if we got βthe shot.β We will.
Whatβs a Full Session?
Full sessions are where the real magic happens. They last about 45 to 60 minutes and give us time to slow down, settle in, and really tell your story.
This is where we capture the little thingsβyour daughter resting her head on your shoulder like she still does, the way your son lights up when you tease him, the way your baby fits on your hip, or the glance between you and your partner that quietly says, βLook at this life weβve built.β
If your kids need time to warm up (whether theyβre three or seventeen), this gives them the space to do just that. Some of the best smiles show up when no oneβs in a rush. And some of the most meaningful moments unfold when we just let them.
Choose a full session if:
You want a gallery of images that truly capture this season of life
Youβre holding onto a chapter that feels bigβlike the last year before kindergarten or the last one before they leave for college
You want room for outfit changes, a meaningful location, or simply more breathing space
Youβre craving more than just photosβyou want connection and emotion
Plenty of families start with a mini, fall in love with the experience, and come back for a full session when theyβre ready for more. Sometimes you donβt realize how much it matters until you see it in front of you.
Still Not Sure?
Hereβs a simple way to decide.
If you want a few updated photos with no stress, a mini session is perfect.
If you want to slow down, sink into the moment, and walk away with a full gallery that feels like your familyβs story, a full session is the way to go.

Want to See the Difference?
Sometimes it helps to see what a mini session and a full session can look like in real life. Below, Iβm sharing two families I photographed in the same location so you can get a feel for what each type of session offers.
First up: a 15-minute mini session. Short, sweet, and packed with loveβwe kept things simple and stayed in one spot, focusing on connection and getting that classic family shot with a few sweet in-between moments.
Next: a full family session in the same spot, plus a second location nearby. Because we had the time to move around and settle in, we were able to get a little more creative and a lot more variety. With older kids, that looked like relaxed group shots, natural interactions, and a mix of classic portraits and more candid moments that felt true to them. Full sessions give us the space to slow down and really tell the story of who your family is right now.
No Wrong Choice, Just the Right One for You
Whether we spend 15 minutes or an hour together, Iβm going to make sure you feel seen, celebrated, and cared for. But if this season feels like one you never want to forget, letβs make space for it.
Letβs press pause and make something beautiful.
